Cooper City High School’s Sound of Pride Marching Band and Color Guard attended their first competition of the year on October 5, 2013 at Flanagan High School, where they presented their show “Motive to Masterpiece” for friends, family, other bands and various judges.

The band received a superior rating in music and general effect, the highest rating possible for any category.  In addition to this, they placed third in their size division.

“The performance was solid, especially for the first competition of the season,” Drum Major Marla Manes said. “But no one in the Sound of Pride is satisfied with “solid.”

Creating and perfecting a show takes many hours on the behalf of the students, so those involved take their competitions very seriously.  This contest was the first of many, and considering the fact that the Sound of Pride’s show had only been finished five days before the competition, and that they still have one more song to add later, there is a lot of opportunity for improvement.

The overall winner in CCHS’ division was Stoneman Douglas, who eventually also achieved the second highest score out of all competing bands; second to Park Vista.

“As we approach upcoming competitions and state championships, our excitement just keeps on growing and growing,” Manes said.  “We’re all trying so hard; we give everything to this program.”
