On September 16, the streaming service Netflix released the must-see delightful treat that is the movie “The Devil All The Time.” This psychological thriller film was based on a book by Donald Ray Pollock, which follows the distinct, yet oddly connected stories of the people in the town of Knockemstiff.

The cast and crew behind the film did an incredible job of producing it, and Pollock– as well as every audience member who has the pleasure of viewing it– is sure to enjoy the film adaptation of the novel.

With interesting characters and a plot that will have viewers on the edge of their seats, it’d be a shame for someone to miss out on seeing this masterpiece. It feels like a blast to the past in western times with impeccable acting and flawless accents.

While the pace can be quick at times, it makes up for it in its unique and creative execution.

There are countless stories in this one film that will immediately engage the audiences’ attention from the beginning. There are also numerous characters to choose to love, despise or be intrigued by. Tom Holland, who played the main character Arvin Russell, did a phenomenal job portraying his character and truly embodied Russell’s characteristics, such as being violent and aggressive, yet caring to those he loves.

Another actor that should be mentioned based on his amazing acting is Bill Skarsgard, who plays Willard Russell, Arvin’s father. He’s extremely talented at portraying a man who goes through a downward spiral after he receives tragic news about his wife. It’s intriguing to see how his character goes from a man happily in love to a dangerous and depressed person.

The film does a fantastic job of making audiences question the motives of the character’s actions, yet makes sure to answer all of the questions viewers might have by the end of the film. It’s refreshing to see the contrasting personalities between some characters, such as Lenora (Eliza Scanlen), who is extremely religious and prays constantly, while Arvin was forced to pray by his father, which affected his views on religion later on.

The cinematography was also magnificent and should not be overlooked, but rather deserves to be mentioned on the account that it was executed beautifully. The constant setting of the woods makes for a great factor of suspense and it leaves a great effect for viewers, who will be wondering what will happen next in that solemn setting.

The film is also able to include a fair amount of tragedy throughout that will tug at the heartstrings of viewers.

It’s additionally a breath of fresh air to see Robert Pattinson play a preacher with a dark secret and watching his journey throughout the film. It’s also interesting to see how many of the actors in this movie are actually British, such as Holland, Pattinson and Harry Melling, who played Roy Laferty. Despite the film’s American setting, they all portrayed extremely convincing western accents.

The film is also able to include a fair amount of tragedy throughout that will tug at the heartstrings of viewers. Its graphic nature successfully portrays bullying and abuse, while also showing revenge in a compelling way that will leave the audience cheering for Arvin Russell during his quest.

Once again, Holland should be commemorated on his fabulous performance in this film. His acting is marvelous throughout the entire movie and his relationship with several of the other characters is captivating. Viewers will be joyous to watch as he takes vengeance on the oppressors and protects the oppressed.

Between the wonderful plot that was executed beautifully, the compelling characters performed by talented actors and the gorgeous cinematography, this film is sure to entertain everyone every step of the way.
