As the first few weeks of school begin to set in, students at CCHS and all over Broward County are adapting to their back-to-school routines for the new year. While plenty of students are happy to be back, there are several who feel overwhelmed about the courses they are taking and the assignments that come with them.

It is always important to stay focused in school and maintain good grades, but the process of doing so does not have to be so stressful. Staying organized throughout the school year can make a significant difference on how students perceive their academic schedule.

One way that students stay organized during school is by having individual notebooks and folders for certain subjects. Storing random papers in a backpack and using one notebook for multiple classes can become very disorienting.

“I always found that keeping separate folders and notebooks for each class made the process of going through my work much easier,” sophomore O’Brien Harris said. “Whenever I needed to work on notes or turn in an assignment, I never have to worry about struggling to find what I need.”

With assignment deadlines being a key factor as to why many students are worried about work throughout the year, keeping an agenda on a daily basis can also help to alleviate the stress.

“It is definitely a good idea to keep up with due dates using a planner or agenda, and really anybody could do it,” sophomore Tristan Sei said. “I personally like to use the calendar app on my iPhone to set reminders and make sure I turn in work on time.”

Since going back to school prompts students to wake up early and come to class on time, keeping a consistent sleep schedule can be very beneficial for many as well.

Staying up late to finish a project or turn in an assignment last minute allows academic performance to vary and overall affect the mental health of students. Going to sleep at a reasonable hour can develop a healthy routine and prevent procrastination.

“Having a designated hour to sleep has helped me tackle my assignments much easier,” freshman Daniel Mendiola said. “I’m definitely in a better mood when I get homework done earlier in the day and go to sleep knowing I completed what I needed to.”

While having an organized routine throughout the year allows students to work through their schedule in a much more simple and efficient manner, some students also think it allows getting work done to not be as unbearable as it seems.

“I always used to hate studying for quizzes and tests, simply because I didn’t have the motivation to search through my bag for notes in a notebook I used for like three different classes,” sophomore Brandon Charles said. “It’s really just something about keeping everything orderly that summoned a drive in me to just get my work done.”

With the year just beginning, it’s now a great time to start creating an organized lifestyle for school, as it can go a very long way in supporting a healthy academic experience.
