RECAP GIRLS VARSITY LACROSSE VS FLANAGAN

The girls lined up for their stick check with their french braids in place, goggles on, and mouthguards in. They circled up in a huddle and received a pep-talk from their coach, preparing to play their third game of the season. The Lady Cowboys screamed their cheer as loud as they could and took their positions on the field, ready to play the Flanagan Falcons.

The referee set up the girls sticks for the draw, and slowly stepped away with the whistle in his mouth. When the sound of the whistle went off, senior Florence Andrieu snatched the ball out of the air and ran it down to the attack. The Cowboys moved the ball around the defense, waiting to make cuts. Junior Amanda Rivas ran the ball towards the goal and shot, but missed and Flanagan gained possession. The Cowboys were able to stop the Falcons before they passed it down to the attack. The girls calmed the game down a bit, and moved the ball in a circle. Sophomore Olivia Lewis ran the ball towards the goal but was fouled, and received a penalty shot on goal. She ran the ball in and shot it between the goalies leg, scoring the first goal of the game. Lewis took the next faceoff and won it, passing the ball down to Rivas. The Cowboys were forcing the ball and took shots at horrible angles. Flanagan won the ball from Cooper City and ran it down to the Cowboys defense. The Cowboys were able to strip the Falcons of the ball and passed it to the midfielders. Andrieu had the ball in her stick and saw that Lewis was open, she passed her the ball and Lewis took a shot to the upper left corner, making the score 2-0. The Flanagan players started to began to get mad and started trash talking on the field, getting into the players heads. The Cowboys were dominating in the draw, and continued to move the ball around. Junior Crystal Williams saw an opening in the Flanagan defense and ran the ball in. She took a shot at the upper left corner of the goal, scoring the third goal of the game. Andreiu won the next draw and passed it down to Rivas. Rivas beat her defender and ran it in, scoring the fourth goal of the game.

The Cowboys had a talk after the first quarter, and got their heads back in the game. Lewis won the draw and threw it to Andreiu, who passed it around the defense. The girls settled the ball and waited for the defense to create openings. Rivas drove the ball towards the goal, but a foul was called on the Falcons. Rivas raised her stick, ready to take a shot on the goal. Rivas took a hard shot and bounced the ball in, making the score 5-0. “I think with all the new incoming young players we have this season there is a lot of potential for it to be a great year,” Rivas said. The girls won almost every draw, moving the ball towards the goal. Andrieu saw Lewis making a run and passed it to her. Lewis took a shot and hit the upper right corner, making the score of the game 6-0. The Falcons attempted to shoot the ball on the Cowboys but were unsuccessful. The girls were up by six goals when the half ended.

Cooper City came out stronger than they had before in the second half. Andrieu lined up for the draw and got her stick ready. She pushed the ball towards Lewis who picked up the ground ball. Lewis saw Andrieu cut and passed her the ball. Andreiu shot left handed and scored the seventh goal of the game. “I think that we will do really well this season,” Andreiu said. “We are playing much harder teams than in the past but I think that if we work together we will be successful.”. Lewis took the next draw and won it, taking it down to the attack. She passed it to Williams who the moved it around. Lewis received the ball back and took a shot on goal, making the score 8-0. The Cowboys won the draw again and moved the ball around the attack. Lewis gained possession of the ball again and ran the ball in. She shot to the upper left corner of the goal, scoring the ninth goal of the game. Flanagan won possession of the ball and moved it down towards the Cowboys defense. The Cowboys were caught off guard and Flanagan scored their first and only goal of the game. The Cowboys had another shot on goal before the third quarter ended, scored by Lewis.

The Lady Cowboys were completely dominating the game by the end. Lewis won the next draw and passed the ball to senior Alyson Djuren. Djuren passed it back to Lewis who shot the ball to the upper left corner of the goal. The girls lined up to take the draw, and the Falcons had a delay of game, giving the Cowboys possession of the ball. Lewis threw the ball to Williams who then threw the ball back to Lewis. Lewis saw Williams open again passed it to her. Williams took a hard shot on goal, making the score 12-1. The Cowboys won the next draw and moved it around the attack. Djuren made a run towards the goal and shot to the lower corner of the goal, scoring her first goal of the season. The game was coming close to an end, but the Cowboys continued to give it their all. Lewis had possession of the ball and ran it in, scoring the final goal of the game.

The girls ran to their goalie and then towards the bench. They shook hands and then headed towards the huddle to have their post game talk. The girls won their third game of the season with a score of 14-1. “I think we worked together as a team but play to our potential,” senior Meagan Suss said.

Final Score: Cooper City 14, Flanagan 1
