Volleyball big 8

Following the conclusion of an extraordinary year for CCHS volleyball, our lady  Cowboys were given the opportunity to play in the Big 8 Tournament, hosted at Cardinal Gibbons High School.

Played at the end of the regular season, the Big 8 Tournament is a tournament which the eight best teams in Broward County go head to head in friendly matches until the number one team is crowned. The eight high schools which were selected as Broward’s powerhouse teams included Cardinal Gibbons, Monarch, Saint Thomas, Cypress Bay, West Broward, Pembroke Pines Charter, Fort Lauderdale, and your very own Cooper City Cowboys.

Going 9-4 in the regular season, our district champions were ecstatic when hearing that they made the prominent tournament. However, playing a very good Monarch team first round posed a great challenge. Monarch, who beat our lady Cowboys twice in the past, was looking to keep this win streak alive. However, despite the complications, our lady Cowboys stepped up their game, winning 2-1 in a very intense match. Second round of playoffs however, did not go in the Cowboys’ favor. Opponent Cardinal Gibbons seemed to be too much for the Cowboys, ending their tournament hopes in a dominating 2-0 performance. With our Cowboys out of the tournament, Cardinal Gibbons played Saint Thomas for the gold. Even with the home court advantage, Gibbons still could not stop Saint Thomas from winning their third BCAA Big 8 Tournament title in a row.
Although the lady Cowboys did not win it all, Head Coach Jill Smitherman and the team were proud of placing a respectable 4th place overall. Making the Big 8 Tournament, along with the district championship, was a result of hard work both on and off the court; and was well deserved by the Cowboys. This accomplishment perfectly recapped our volleyball team’s season, and foreshadows upcoming greatness. Cooper City High School is proud of the great season from the lady Cowboys and we thank them for bringing our school home a district championship.
