CCHS’s National Honor Society Brain Brawl team reigned as champions of the South District, before losing to Stoneman Douglas High School On January 26th for state championship.
The Brain Brawl is a competition that allows students in the National Honor Society to compete against other schools by answering academic based questions. The questions can range from a variety of subjects including science, mathematics, sports, literature, and history.

“To be on the Brain Brawl team, you need to be knowledgeable in pretty much every subject,” NHS historian Elizabeth Eisenberg said.

The competition is double-elimination, meaning that once a team loses against two schools, they are out of the competition. There are two rounds, consisting of twenty questions each. The goal is to answer more questions correctly compared to the other team. Teams can also opt for a “toss up”, which will allow them to answer four additional questions that could help put them in the lead.

“Our team has been very successful in the past,” NHS sponsor Jorge Ditas said.

This year’s Brain Brawl team consisted of seniors Grant Falkenburg, Greg Levine, Reva Scharf, Emily Scharf, and juniors Simon Shuham, Catherine Yip, Sharon Kay, and Adam Markovich.

To become South District Champions, the Brain Brawl team beat schools such as NOVA, Miramar High School, Halendale High School, Pembroke Pines High School and Western High School.

On January 26th, Cooper city went up against Stoneman Douglas High School for the State Competition but fell short with a final score of 215 to 95.

“The team put forth a valiant effort but unfortunately could not win this year,” NHS President Chuka Esiobu said.
